| The Hydrogen Economy
 (Jeremy Rifkin)

Rifkin skillfully examines the Worlds? current oil and natural gas supplies. Specific terms such as the Hubberts? Curve are introduced to the
reader for examination. Rifkin carefully provides useful information without
expressing his personal opinion. Rather he provides facts which will lead the
reader to his or her own conclusions. One example would be the equipment
infrastructure for refining fossil fuel. The amount of money involved for
updating current Unites States refineries is overwhelming. Should the United
States fund the updating while promoting alternative fuel sources? or Should
current equipment be run to capacity and hope for the best? Realizing the
benefits from fuel cell technology, the Bush administration has formidably
funded an alternative fuel source program.
 Rifkin takes the reader to
the future where Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology will become a reality
available for our personal consumption. The ?HEW? or Hydrogen Energy Web
will allow users to sell excess energy and monitor individual use. The
individual homeowner/citizen will be responsible and proactive producing,
storing and utilizing their energy. The seventies under the Carter
administration was a wake up call for the United States and the World to
recognize alternative fuel resources. Unfortunately, over twenty five years
later major economic countries are still relying on fossil fuels to run their
economies. Alternative Fuel sources are no longer a sci fi wonder but a major
 necessity for world economic stability.
 While costs involved
researching and instituting fuel cell technology are high, the long term
benefits gained from it?s utilization are extraordinary. For example,
hydrogen fuel cell use produces zero carbon monoxide emissions while our
current fossil fuel use deteriorates the atmosphere and air we breathe. Also,
hydrogen fuel cells are an infinite energy supply while fossil fuel resources
become harder and harder to mine. The building and equipment needed to
extract the available deposits in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would only
decrease pump fuel prices one penny in the United States. These are just a
few of the comparisons presented to readers. Energy scarcity is a concern for
everyone and we collectively and/or communally all need to come together
 for global resolution.
