Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
(John Le Carre)

Publicidade
This is the first installment in Le Carré?s Karla trilogy,
which pits English spy George Smiley against the Soviets' fiendish
spymaster Karla. Saturated with the tone and spirit of the Cold War,
the novel is a classical study into the Cold War?s paranoias and
morally vague principles.

This novel recalls George Smiley out of the early retirement, or a well-disguised
sacking, to check the possibility that Soviets have penetrated the
inner sanctum of the British Secret Service. Using the children?s
counting rhyme of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor?Beggarman, Thief,
Smiley assigns these as codewords for his prime suspects. Smiley,
LeCarré?s leading character, is a systematic, reserved,
spectacle-polishing type of a man, and he succeeds where flashier types
fail, due to his determination and uncanny sense for the essence of the
intrigue. However, the Service itself is so corrupt that
Smiley is forced to work without resorting to the Service assets in order not
to alarm his shadowy target lurking in the upper echelons of the secret
establishment. In the signature Le Carré effect, the reader finds
himself easily drawn into Smiley?s guessing game. This is
another Le Carré book which is masterfully crafted, very credible as
well as complicated: it is replete with many characters and plots
interwoven with subplots; the prose is classic and richly intricate. To
further complicate the reading, Le Carré leaves much for the reader
to figure out, just as for the spies to analyze. The reader will
observe only the causal actions of the characters, and will have to
complete the puzzle without resorting to glimpses into characters?
inner lives. This is another Le Carré book that takes too long for the
action to develop, and when it starts, it?s hard to tell where the
actions is headed. The part of figuring out is the fun part of the book
as well as of Smiley?s game. This book is probably the most realistic espionage novel ever written.
