The Prince
(Niccolo Machiavelli)
Tremendous is The Prince. This book provides the philosophy of defeating the enemy that you face in combat. The way he describes his methods of proceeding in war gives vision into the Florentine's mind. During periods of war and conquests the prince has to be a certain way to rule his people. He must have a different mind set that allows victory in battle. This author tells the story of the potter's son who rose through the ranks of war that he devised a deceitful plan to over throw the senators and the wealthiest lords in the state. Machiavelli shows wisdom removed from the heart of the matter. In his analysis of the good and bad things a Prince must do if he were to rule decisively and firmly his clear observation of tactics used in the various wars of neighboring countries of Florence gives him access to inside information and this helps him show how a clever prince of battle should conduct himself. Basically, Machiavelli states that one who is to take over and control the state does not necessarily have to come from the rewards of riches or delight of genius. Now it is important to understand that the author possesses a tremendous command of historical data. He offers the reader, initiate or adept precise logic from past historical facts about warriors from the ancient world. He provides current events of his time also. Like the historian of the twenty-first century looking back to the civil wars of the United States of America to gain insight, he provide logistical and demographic data that would have been classified during his time. In reality the time that Machiavelli lived was a time when only the hierarchy could read. If you did not have transportation then you probably lived out in the woods or meadows and were disconnected from the main stream of society. Thus, in an effort to give a technical advantage to the aspiring Prince, Machiavelli provides a good read for the students of war.
