Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
Pride and Prejudice! A tale of marriage and a mother's quest to marry off her five daughters to whoever is available! The story is largely without any fine description of palace or stately home and is instead, infused with wit, the magic of the heart and the subtlety of the female mind. Set in the Derbyshire countryside the story unfolds around the lives of the middle classes and the aristocracy coming together in wedlock, to the dismay of some and the delight of others. The Bennett family with their five daughters, a witty, sarcastic father and their flighty, scheming mother with her delusions of granduer. The family aim is to achieve a suitable marraige for each girl, preferably a marraige into some wealth and good breeding, as the family live under the shadow of an 'entail', which bequeaths the family home to the nearest surviving male relative - the quirky cousin Mr Collins. Numerous set backs fall upon Mrs Bennetts asides creating many 'catastrophic' disappointments for her until finally, she sees her daughters in the positions she has dreamed of - well more or less! The male characters are revered then bemoaned in a rollercoaster of emotion and expectation. The females a heady mix of haute coitre, education (and the lack of it), and giddy flightiness, are generally to be approved if not a little silly! Three daughters marry well, one not at all and the other disgraces her family but finally redeems herself by wedlock which is better tha nothing!!
