My Sister's Keeper
(Jodi Picoult)
My Sister?s Keeper is a very thought-provoking novel that reaches deep inside the reader. This book is, no doubt, for a very general and widespread audience. It captures the mind and heart of every reader, as the story is consumed into the audiences own life, and they can not help but think, ?what if this happened to me?? and ?what would I do??. My Sister?s Keeper is about the long publicized and debated issue of genetic manufacturing, and hits home with the ethical concerns. However, the virtuosity with this book is that such ethical issues relating to this topic is taken out of the lab and put into the lives of a family... In particular, a thirteen-year-old girl. Furthermore, the book faces the question of parental decision-making and whether parents can always make the most healthy decisions for their children. Especially when one choice will severely affect another child?s well-being. Picoult knocks heads against walls to show the reader the imbalance of a family in ethical trauma and the direct effect on the children . Despite Picoult?s fantastic deliverance of feeling throughout the novel, it is written in an undoubtedly subjective manner, with no space to develop your own attitude on the subject. It is extremely in-depth, as Picoult has approached the issue from every characters perspective and has successfully demonstrated how parental decisions effect each member of the family. Although it is a very moving and ethically burdened novel, it is still a relaxing and enjoyable read. It is in no way fast paced, but deals with the issue in a firm and proficient manner. This hot topic novel is a must read by all as it brings to life, literally, some of real concern of ethics in medical science today.
