Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone
(J.K. Rowling)
Introduction This is my first review here and I wanted it to be something special, so kept on thinking what it could be. Finally, I decided what better than the Triple Smarties Gold Award Winner Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Story Backdrop The Story is set in slightly semi-modern England. The story takes us to a parallel world of Wizards, who stay along with Muggles(non-Wizards), but have their own secret places and communities. The story concept initially reminded me of Men In Black wherein Aliens disguise like humans. Similarly here Wizards stay among muggles and even intermingle with them, but carry on their traditions separately. Story The story centers around a small boy "Harry Potter". Born to the Potters, Harry is bereaved of his parents in one of the most horrified events in the Wizard Community. Harry somehow survives with nothing more than a scar on his forehead and is guided to the home of his aunt's (mother's sister) house. He is not a welcome guest here. Ten years latter, the Dursleys still love to hate Harry. Harry is the boxing bag, kicking butt and dustbin for the Dursleys. Vernon (Father) and Petunia (Mother) Dursley along with Dudley (Son) Dursley take turns to make Harry feel the most unwanted kid in the neighbourhood. One fine day, on Dudley's b'day the Dursley's take Harry alongwith them for a outing to a zoo. By accident, Harry suddenly realizes that he can speak to snakes and is puzzled by it all. Things start to change suddenly in Harry's life after that. Somebody sends a mail to Harry, the first time in all these years. The mail ends up in Vernon Dursley's hand and he burns it before Harry can read it. Then there is another mail and so on and so forth, but none reach Harry's hand. Finally frustrated, Harry is taken to a hideous place by the Dursleys. Enter Hagrid, a huge man twice the size of normal man. He rescues Harry from the Dursleys and tells him that he has got admitted to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Thus starts Harry's first steps into the world of magic. Enroute to the school, Harry gets a friend Ron Weasley. Another startling fact that Harry comes to know is he is very famous amongst the wizards. He knows not what, but is sure that everyone is eyeing his scar on the forehead carefully. Enter Hogwarts and the fun and games begin. Harry gets sorted into the Gryfinndor House by the sorting hat which feels that he can either join Slytherin or Gryfinndor. Harry chooses Gryfinndor because he had heard that all the dark wizards have come from Slytherin only. Harry, Ron and another friend cum foe, Hermione Granger set out for some interesting tid bits, finding their way in a magical world. There are tiffs and fights and arguments galore between the three, but finally they end up as friends thanks to common hatred of Draco Malfoy, new joinee into the Slytherin House. Somewhere down the line Harry, Ron and Hermione find out that there is a stone "Philosopher's Stone" that has been hid in Hogwarts and the Evil Lord Voldemort is somehow looking for getting it. This stone is supposedly guarded by charms from each of the professor at Hogwarts, but someone is deliberately finding a solution to each of these charms. So join Harry, Ron and Hermione in the exciting chase to reach the "Philosopher's Stone" before the Evil Lord Voldemort. Salient Features 1) The plot is very simplistic. 2) The story narration would interest both kids as well as adults. 3) The description of magical world is amazing. Things like the Hogwarts school, the entry in the school, the sorting using the sorting hat, the various magical items on display, magical wands, owls as carriers, Quidditch as a game have all been brilliantly conceptualized. 4) The characters of each magical character right from Professors like McGonnagall, Snape, Quirrel to Hagrid and Albus Dumbbeen excellently pence. 5) The attention to details in most of the book has been brilliant. 6) The pace of the book has been retained throughout and there was no let up in the pace. 7) The character of Harry which is very charming is complemented by the simplicity of Ron's character and Hermione's hard working character. Flip Side 1) The problem with any such novel which deals with magic and sorcery will have an element of ridiculous to it and there are quite a few moments in this book. 2) The ending is quite abrupt. There could have been slightly more details to this. Verdict One of the most amazing books, I have read. In the category of child fiction and fairy tales, this book is a classic. If you have a child around 10 years of age, this book is a must. If you are into your teens or even older, you can go ahead and enjoy this book anyhow. Would be exciting and refreshing to read. I would give a 5 star rating to this J.K. Rowling multi-million raking bestseller.
