The Book of Ruth is a four chapter love story that covers the spectrum of human compassion to the divine love of God. As the story opens, we find a family driven from their home by famine. While in the foreign land of Moab, the father, Elimelech dies leaving his wife Naomi, and two sons Mahlon and Chilion. The sons take both take a wife and settle into life in this country. As the years pass, the sons also die finding three women left in a society and time where security and worth was found in the men in your life. Devestated Naomi, hurt and bitter, heard the famine was over and decided to return home. She and her daughters-in-law started on the road home but feeling empty, with nothing to offer them, Naomi begged them to return to their own homes. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and through tears saw her way back to her country. But Ruth, pledged to continue until death and beyond with Naomi. These two women found themselves needing to partake of the welfare system of the day by going to glean in the fields as they reached Naomi's homeland. They discovered that the kind, wealthy landowner, Boaz, that took Ruth into his care was a kinsmen-redeemer who could marry Ruth and restore security to this family. It was not out of duty for either as they develop a deep love and respect for each other. Ruth and Boaz marry and present Naomi with a grandson to bring her joy in her old age. The story ends in words with the linange on this child, Obed down through the years to David which yields the son of God himself.
