Bloodless
(Baricco, Alessandro)
Translation by: femme/600/13 November 2005 If "Silk" caused people to perk up their ears, this book, "Bloodless," will have to do away with the foundations of present-day literature since it's where Alessandro Baricco demonstrates his talent with which he masterfully guides the reader through a world that is as real as it is oneiric in this novel of very few pages, published by Anagrama, with the characteristic good taste of this publishing house. Baricco carries out an investigation of the oldest and most recondite cobwebs of the human condition, without compassion, equipped with a knife and, at times, a razor. Therefore, the story of a vengeful act could, at the same time, be a love story like few are in that, beginning with a few facts that he suddenly throws out at us, he develops a moving and strong story line made up of silences and precise words like those that this successful Italian writer has already accustomed us to so that if he manipulates well the same kind of language that he used in his magnificent "Ocean Sea," he surpasses himself in this book. He again concedes a supplemental value to proper names that are so well chosen and to the Hispanic setting, at times Mediterranean in this narration, perhaps to achieve a greater empathy with Spanish readers who have already seen in Baricco that ability which only some writers have that is universal in all of their stories. Baricco succeeds in introducing the reader to countries that are very different from their own. In his works, the readers will recognize something of a personal nature, of course, but common to all people. Is Baricco a new Steinbeck? This great, short novel will doubtlessly be, for anyone who is not familiar with Baricco's work, a completely new discovery. He is a living, young, prolific writer. Do you need any other reason to read "Bloodless?" There is not a single defect in the Anagrama edition. But there is already strong applause for his customary high level of skill. At the same time, he delivers an image, destined for the book's cover, which defines the essence of the same. Go and get it. If you have blood in your veins, this is a must read.
