Lessons To Learn
(Corena MacLean)
As the old man sits on the park bench ,deep in thought I cannot help but notice, when he looks up at me ,His once laughing eyes have reduced to dark pools of sadness,.I cannot help but wonder what thoughts can be coursing through his head to cause his hair to become so thin and grey..He has become a shell of a man,His once athletic shape has turned to mush,a lack of ambition ?,maybe..Life can deal a person some pretty darned hard lessons, and the road can be pretty rocky in placesThe strong willed, will reach their destination and the weak will fall through the cracks..The old man has the weight of the world on his shoulders as we begin a conversation..He struggles as he picks his words carefully to find starting point.A smile comes to his face as he begins to remember the good years behind him and the uncertainty of the future,The sun has begun to warm up and he takes off his jacket.I cannot help but notice that underneath the dirty, torn overcoat, is a presentable suit coat..The stories he tells of days gone bye.At the age of 16 he joined the marines, Living a fast paced Life of orders and demands.has taken its toll, as seen in his posture.A small grin ,slowly crosses his face as he remembers the one true love of his life, he describes her as, a one of a kind rare gem. treating her like a penny when later he realized that she was worth her weight in gold.He knew that she gave him her most precious gift, her heart, and he has long since left it shattered,to let someone else pick up from where he coundn't..He could only learn from past errors in judgement. The suit coat ,tells a tale of wealth of long ago, being a banker for a period of time,he talks of people in general. Some people don't need to be wealthy ,or have the power that money can bring to be happy,Wealth can make a person greedy whereas starting from the bottom and earning your way up seemed to be the way to go.As I sit here and converse with this man I cannot help but wonder what his future will bring.Did he ever find the peace of mind that he was searching for? The long ,ever so forsaken family ?,the broken dreams? As the sun is setting around us,he moves forward with his story,to the present time.Teling me of the sites that he has witnessed- even today.Couples holding hands, childrens laughter,Christmas packages all beautifully wrapped. This can only mean that there is still happiness in the world and it is only a matter of finding and hanging on to it .Some things don't have to exceed out budgets and dreams are as real as you want to make them..From talking to this older Gentleman for the past several hours,I have learned quite a bit about his life and came to quite a few realizations of mine..Some things in life are still free and not everything has to bear a price tag.How can you put a price on laughter?, togetherness? or that good feeling that comes with knowing that you are loved.?,So when you offer that special someone the world on a silver platter ,let them know that your heart is there too.Don't take things for granted, because some day It might be your world falling apart..Who can you depend upon to help put the pieces back together?? So to anyone reading this,I hope that you learn something from my conversation with this old man just as I have..It is too bad really, that I wake up to find out it was only a dream,But ! Oh so real!!
