The Fords: An American Epic
(Peter Collier, David Horowitz)

Publicidade
Whereas most early automakers want to build a vehicle targeted for the rich, Henry Ford wanted to build a dependable vehicle for the masses. In 1903, after one failed attempted at becoming an automaker, Ford took his improved automobile to the race at Grosse Point. Promoters had organized it for wealthy investors looking to cash in on the huge profits the new machines promised. They planned three twenty-five lap races on a one-mile oval track, electric, steam and lastly gasoline-powered automobiles. Three men would compete in the gasoline-powered race. Men in the know would watch Ford?s two competitors, for they had built their cars for speed, whereas Ford had built his for dependability. When one of the cars had to drop out of the race because of engine problems, the promoters reduced the race to ten laps on the theory that no one wanted to watch Ford getting humiliated for twenty-five laps. As the race began, their predictions proved true. The other car took the lead by several laps, traveling at the incredible speed of thirty-five miles per hour. Ford had one other great disadvantage; he couldn?t drive very well. He had a hard time negotiating turns at high speeds. His tenaciousness effort and refusal to quit did little more than make him the brunt of what looked like a humiliating defeat The other driver, pushing his car to the fullest, trying to take full advantage of a great victory, blew the engine in his car, allowing Ford to win the race literally unopposed and proving the superiority and dependability of his automobile. That automobile became the product of his second Ford Motor Company. However, he proved too difficult to work with and the other investors bought him out, changing the company?s name to the Cadillac Motor Company.
