The Rainmaker
(John Grisham)
John Grisham keeps readers on the edge of their seats again with this courtroom thriller. The scene is in Memphis again, and the current protagonist is Rudy Baylor, a 3rd year law student at Memphis State University, whose high aspirations of entering the legal professsion are rudely disappointed time and time again by the cutthroat ruthlessness of all of the lawyers around him. Rudy Baylor is our everyday hero, for despite all obstacles standing in his path, he is able to help out an older couple whose son is dying because an insurance company refused to pay for an operation. Rudy Baylor is there to fight for his clients despite pressures on all sides to give up. There is a genuine battle of good verses evil. Don't get me wrong, Rudy Baylor's no saint. He's an average everyday guy with his own set of sins but, unlike a lot of the lawyers in this novel this greenhorn comes in contact with he obviously has a conscious and will not stoop to unethical behavior. This novel shouts out through colorful, humanistic characters how important it is for lawyers to fight for the rights of individuals who cannot fight back. The Rainmaker will want to make you become a lawyer to change society because this work provokes the average joe to say, "Hey, this isn't right! We need to fight back and change the way things are done in our country." It will make you laugh, cry, and throw the book against the wall. It has all the elements of a good read, including sitting on the edge of your seat suspense, intrigue, as well as humor and romance. Get inside Rudy's head as he battles with corporate America. You won't be disappointed.
