From the top of its montain, the Overlook waits for its next victim to increase the family picture. The Overlook hotel, wich was build between 1907 and 1909 and wich has welcomed some of the most famous names of the history, hinds many shameful things to its customers during the summer season. But during the cold period, far away from public's eyes, it's another strory, and this remarkable building needs once again a guard to help maintaining it during the rude winter.Jack Torrance, an abrupt man who just has bring to a close a cure of desintoxication, has an interview for the job. Everything goes wrong with his wife, he got no work and would like to take advantage of this six mounths of loneliness to end an unfinished novel and start writing again. The director feels the obligation to tell him that the claustration has caused, during the winter 1970-1971, horrible murders commited by Delbert Grady, an alcoholic guard who had massacred his daughters with an axe before killing his wife and himself with a gun. His son, Danny, starts to make terrible nightmares in wich a menacing raucous voice screams while a hammer resounds muffled noises against the wall... He wake up suddenly and looks at his imaginary friend, who communicate with him. Tony informs him that the place his going to with his parents is very bad for them; because Tony knows everything and he is never wrong. When the couple goes to Overlook for winter, Danny meets Halloran, a big black cooker who surprises Danny because he can also communicate with Tony.Halloran says that Tony, the invisible friend, is what his grandmother was calling the Shinning, wich is an amazing capacity of great and premonitory telepathy, sometimes very worrying. After this closing day, The Torrance family is alone for a long period. Winter comes and envelops the wonderful landcape in a white deep coat. Quickly, Jack's behavior becomes to change. He sees strange things like shrubs looking like animals trying to get him... But he doesn't say anything et just lives whith it, cohabiting even with ghosts, like the sympathetic Lloyd, waiter in the majectic Colorado Bar, who satisfies all his desires. Then he meets Grady, this dear Grady who explains to him how he had tu punish his wife and children who were refusing to obey him. He let him understand too, whith the extreme courtesy of a very well educated majordomo, that his son Danny is very desobedient too and that it is time to do something about it. Danny meets creatures too, like in the room 217, in wich he is attacked by the dead body of a woman who died drowned in the bath of this same room, long time ago. He manages to join his parents who are looking for him at the ground floor, but he is like under catalepsy and is unable to answer Wendy, his mother, who becomes angry against Jack who is, for her, responsable of this problem because they are alone in this hotel. Jack is competely absorbed by the Overlook and decides to punish his wife and son. He pursues them in all the hotel's corridors with his hammer wich punctuates the rythm of the prosecution and pulverizes the walls at every impact... The atmosphere is suffocating. But Jack will make a mistake, forgetting something, wich will change the destiny of The family and the Overlook.
