Fall Of A Kingdom (the Farsala Trilogy-book1)
(Hilari Bell)

This novel is based largely upon history but with a futuristic twist that I enjoy! Hilari Bell brings her characters to life with their flaws and their passions. Three very different people shape the future of Farsala in their own unique way. The first is Soraya who is a spoiled brat and devotedly loved by her father who is in charge of the great army of Farsala. To remain in control he has to ?sacrifice? his daughter but he makes plans to have her escape from the clutches of the Priests. She lives in the Forest and regularly visits a race of desert people with special powers. She ultimately learns the powers and hints that they will be used in the next two novels of the series. She learns to go from selfish to giving and to love others. The second main character is Jiaan, who is the bastard son of the father of Soraya. He spends his life trying to glow in his father?s eyes even though he is thought of as inferior. I think Jiaan?s role was larger than the other two characters for the first book. He works his way up the social ladder though still disliked always and eventually helps his father in an important battle to the point where his status no longer matters and he takes charge of a branch of the army himself. The third main character is Kavi. He?s a peddler who cheats people out of their money and is always running from the law. In this book he goes back and forth from being likable to hated by not only other characters but the reader as well. He goes from being a friend to a traitor and back again and hints of being better in the next novel. The story revolves around the three of them and their experiences as a Roman like army came battling into their unprepared section of the world. They are better fighters and have a greater plan for a political system than Farsala. When the father tries to band together everyone to fight the invaders he?s constantly rebuffed and in the end he pays the ultimate price for his country?s lifestyle. Intermittent between this story is another story of courageous battle between ancient people of their country to up-play the tragedy of the novel.
I loved the tone of this novel and eagerly await the next two in the series of how Jiaan, Kiev, and Soraya lead sections of the army to try and defeat the invaders?taking up where the army leader fell behind and I?m guessing will change the political system of Farsala as they do it. The pace was quick and fast-read. The plot was smooth without any dull parts. A book for both men and women to enjoy for all it?s complexities. There are fights and wars and passions and hopes and dreams. Hilari Bell really points out what different kind of lives there are out there and how they can greatly impact one another without even trying. She points out the Great Wheel of Time and how things change eventually. She leads us through one beautiful and enchanting scene after another with thick forests, empty wastelands, fertile homelands, and blood bathed battlegrounds. Each character had a wide range of people to react to; from Soraya?s cold-hearted mother to the nurturing and teaching desert elder, and Jiaan?s warm-hearted father to the mean rivals of the army, and Kiev?s apprenticeship early in the novel to the invader?s top leaders who range from cruel to friendly.
I highly recommend this novel to anyone seeking a good read on a quiet night and those who love action but a book with thought to it.
