Mukta
(Kuppili Padma)
"Mukta " is a collection of stories by Kuppili Padma in Telugu. Padma is a very subtle narrator with no ambiguities in whatevershe is writing about. She has written about the middle class women and their plight. she is extremely good at potraying the pronlems faced by single women who are independent and are in this single status due to various reasons. working women, divorcees and widow's are all fighting to keep the unnecessary interference by the so called respectful society away from their lives. The female characters work odd hours and lead a life without the moralistic bindings to a man. This is not tolerated by the neighbours and most of the time she has to face the crowd of " maryadastulu"( the respectables, leading the right kind of life ), who are hell bent on branding her immoral. Any man coming to her house is a client and her ways of free and independent relationship with the man of her choice is a sin. The society would approve if she would rather suffer singly as a widow or a divorcee. Once thrown out of gear she has no right to be happy. even the so called educated men seem to be living with sixteenth century values. He would enjoy the free spirited women as a body but to project himself as a respectable man he would rather join the respectables than to support the single woman he was with.Ther is a story about an airhostess and about a woman who is a dubbing artist and do not want to tied down by the rules of a marraige, a personal choice made consciously. They stand against all odds, even their male partners. She has written excellent stories in a simple straight language. we still have to unlearn many things to live a dignified and free life. Padma has been branded a feminist and feminist is looked down upon as an advocate of free sex, which is of course a sin. Talk about the concerns and justice for being born as a woman and face the consequences. She doesn't fight the men , she fights the mentality that is deeply ingrained even in those who are born as women but are insensitive to the requirements of freedom, dignity and understanding. She writes against being hunted down for choosing a different way of life.
