Solar Storms Destroy Ozone
A new study cofirms a long-held theory that large Solar
storms rain electricity charged particles down on earth'?
atmosphere and deplete the upper-level ozone for weeks to
months thereafter. New evidence form NASA and NOAA
satellites is helping scientists better understand how man
and nature both play a role in ozone loss. According to
the report in the Geophysical Research letters-Aug1,the
study examined impacts of a series of huge solar examined
impacts of a series of huge solar explosions on the
atmosphere in theNorthern Hemisphere. A solar flare with
an associated coronalmass ejection sentpositively-charged
protons streaming to earth july 14 to 16th. The bombardment
of protons, called a solar proton event, was the third
largest in the last 0 years. Solar storms consist of
coronal mass ejections and solar flares. Coronal mass
ejections and huge bubbles of gas ejected from the Sun and
are often associated with these flares. Solar flares are
explosions on the sun that happen when energy stored in
twisted magnetic fields usually abovesunspots is suddenly
released. Whenprotons like these bombard the upper
atmosphere they break upmolecules of gases like nitrogen
and water vapour, and once freed, those atoms react withozone
molecules and reduce the layer. According to charles
jackman,a researcher at NASa Goddard Space Flight Center?s
laboratory for Atmosphere,a lot of impacts on ozone are
very subtle and happen over long periods of time. But
where these solar proton eventsoccur one can see
immediately a change in the atmosphere. The study?s
investigtors used HALOE instrument aboard atmospherere
search satellite to obtain data on amounts of atmosphere
gases like ozone and oxides of nitrogen in different layers
of the atmosphere in the northern hemisphere. Chlorine and
bromine are the other major culprits in ozone decline. A
constant eye is kept on this protective zone as part of the
Earth Science Enterprise program(to understand
stratospheric ozone depletion by mustering vertical
profiles of ozone,hydrogen chloride,hydrogen
fluoride,methane,water vapour,nitric oxide,nitrogen
dioxide,aerosols and temperature).
