Magical morni
Just Five hours by road from Delhi and 4 knms form Chandigarh the drive to morni is beautiful. Breathtaking vistas of cultivated lush green terraces and dense forests caught our eye at almost every turn and twist in the road. Pines crown the hilltops and trees like sal,neem,mango,ritha,perpal,jamun, shrisham and jkacaranda cover thesloppes. When the trees flower,the hillsides are ablaze with colour. Being avid birdwatches of the feathered variety,we were delighted at the sheer variety on offer:bar-tailed treecreepers,blue perfowls,kalij pheasants,red junglefowl,quails,Himalayan bulbuls and oriental turtle doves. The hills arealso home ot the jackal,langur, hare,hyena,neelgai,sambar and even the leopard. Two lakhs here are seperted by ahhillock but they seemto be interconnected and strangely, the water level inboth the lakes always remains the same!Locals consider the lakes auspicious and gather here festival occasions. We visited the small temple on the banks that shwcases a trimiurti(the Hindu Trinity),which dates back to the 12th century AD when a shiva temple was also supposed to have existed at the site. F or the trekkers morni offers a great deal. So, if yu are a walker bring your hiking gear and trek to the tolakes or the fort. For the more adventurous there are treks to the banks of the rivr ghaggur which flows past morni. But we were not hot on trekkking and kept our walks confined to the goat tracks that lead out of the tourists complex.
