Diwali for chennaiates

Diwali is popularly referred as ?Festival of lights.? It is an epitome of the rich cultural heritage and tradition our nation proudly boasts of. The story of this ancient Festival dates back to the regime of ?Narakasura? who was notoriously famous for violence.
The subjects in his kingdom suffered untold misery at the hands o evil demon. Conscience pricks an individual at the deathbed and Narakasura was no exception to this to the general rule. When lord Krishna killed him he pleaded that his death should not be mourned after. On the contrary his last wish was that the happiness of people on that day should be celebrated in a grand manner every year. This day falls in the middle of November or October. On this occasion people get up early morning and have an oil bath. They wear new dresses offer poojas and prepare sweets. Greetings savories are exchanged between neighborhoods and friends and relatives.

This is followed usually by bursting of crackers usually by the youth in daytime. Flowerpots and rockets are lighted during nights. The colourful flames and sparks is an awesome sight to the passersby. Trader?s shopkeepers come out with multiple offers and discounts to attract customers and achieve sales even at the eve of this function. If we have a look at few of the shopping malls in Chennai it will be evident that they are buzzed with maximum activity.

Ranganathan Street is famous for crowd?s throught the year for the crowds. Their business during festival days does not deserve any special mention. It is a well-known fact that shopkeepers dump the products by the period.usman road is in no way different. Two textile giants namely RMKV and Pothys seem to have captured the entire road.
Entering them is next only to impossible. The crowd buzzing here is only a tip of the iceberg. There are even huge gatherings in some other places like marina beaches Spencer?s and other shopping malls. All these proves the fact that equal importance I s given to dress. Purchasing sweets in city is more popular as workingwomen find little time to buy them. Bulk orders are also placed in catering services in addition to branded sweet sellers like Krishna sweets Adyar Anandha Bhavan.

The purchase of crackers assumes more significance as the name goes ? Festival of Lights?. Retailers and wholesalers in addition to those who sell it regularly throughout the year also sell crackers. They are purchased at nominal prices from Sivakasi popularly referred as the ? Hometown of Crackers?. They are then sold at exorbitant prices in the city, which is hardly affordable to poor. Parents don?t bother to spend much even if it is a burden to them as their loved ones get to burst it only once in a year. Diwali is celebrated with grandeur and luxury at parsh areas. Costumes sweets and crackers are celebrated with grandeur and luxury in parsh areas. They are even used as a tool for vulgar ?exhibition of wealth.?

Children enjoy the bursting sound of crackers as though it brings the happiest moment in their life. This also proves to be a get-together for parent?s friend relatives and neighborhood folk. However this scenario is not the same in the entire city. This function is like an exhibition to the economically downtrodden people. It is pathetic to note that some children in this sector tend to watch those lighting crackers and distributing sweets. The tragedy is that they are often humiliated when they approach others for a cracker. These drastic experiences wither deep in mind. After the great day there are miseries to both children and elders. Some youngsters get injured while bursting crackers and suffer with intolerable pain while it claims lives or disables the part of body in some cases.

The disaster to parents is in the form of credit card bills. The parent?s mental agony for the Childs physical injury adds to the worry. Shopping malls and stores that were formerly filled with peoplelook empty now. Should we spend so much money and add much woes is a rational question that needs to be answered.
