The Assasin Of London Tower
(Livingstone)
The london tower is really a delightful place, the most famous and the most british monument of them all, thought superintendant Marlow, of scotland yard.... Today, the position of governor of the Tower is the most envied and most coveted in the kingdom. Times are gone where high rank prisoners were kept there, where torture took place in these prisons, where decapitations took place on the lawn of this "grass of the queen".Nevertheless, the thick and chilly fog blurs the figures and drowns faces all around: Are these ghostly figures that surround Marlow really those of the official guests attending the reception of the new governer? Wouldn't rather one believe that the souls in distress of the wives of Henry VIII and the count of Essex, lover of Elizabeth 1st, of lord Hastings and of lady Gray, all decapitated with an axe or a sword, have come back to the place of their agony to mingle at the ceremony? it takes just a little fog to incorporate the most crazy weird spectacles. But when, from up the circular road, a horrified guard brandishes a head dripping blood, Marlow knows that this time he is not subject to hallucination... For an extraordinary crime, an extraordinary detective: Discreetly put in charge of the investigation, the ex chief inspector Higgins quickly realizes that he faces one of the most mysterious case of his long career. Consulting his old notes about the London Tower and its history, his eyes land on a small phrase, written long ago, and of which he has lost the meaning: " It is the corbels who hold the truth"... But hush! I'm going to keep silent. Only the corbels know the truth.
