Life of Pi,is an amazing story of survival against all odds,especially
the urge to end it all.Its takes us through the journey of the Life of
one Piscine Molitor Patel from Pondicherry.Piscine shortened to Pi is
like any other boy his age except a little too religious.His father
owns the local zoo,his mother is the typical Indian mother and wife and
his brother Ravi is what you would expect any other older brother to
be.When Pi is sixteen his parents decide to move out of India to Canada
in hope for a better life.They travel on a Thai cargo ship on which
they take with them their belongings which include a host of animals as
well which they plan to give to the zoos there.But their dreams are
shattered when tragedy befalls them and they are caught in a storm.Pi
finds himself being thrown overboard by a couple of chinese speaking
officers.He realises that they have thrown him aboard in a lifeboat to
fend for himself.He finds a zebra,a hyena and a Bengal tiger are
part of the entourage.He scans the horizon for days to look out for his
family when he comes to terms with the fact that they are no more.The
sea calms but not his fears,the zebra is wounded and the hyena feasts
on the live zebra.If that is not enough to sicken a young orphan lost
at sea,there is a hungry tiger somewhere one the boat under the
tarpaulin.The magnificent beast known as Richard Parker gets the better
of the hyena leaving just Pi and the tiger alone for miles around.The
sea stretches endlessly around them.Pi musters up courage to survive
and not to be Richard Parker's next meal.For seven months they manage
to live on the lifeboat without killing themselves or each other for
both the animals learn the basic survival instincts and try to live
together.Pi narrates his daily experiences,the sickening feeling of
death,the hopelessness of it all and the will to survive to greet the
next day.Many a times he felt like giving up and just wished to die but
through it all just the dynamic presence of the magnificent Richard
Parker would get him through the day.Eventually they touch dry land in
New Mexico where Richard Parker leaves without even a last
goodbye.People find him and he is hospitalised.Many queries are raised
as to how he survived and when he tells the officals about the animals
on board and about Richard Parker they think hes speaking in a
delirium.But finally they come to terms with the fact that Pi Patel
survived at sea for seven months in the company of Richard Parker a
Royal Bengal tiger.
