Spread of Islam Islam spread rapidly throughut the World. In 633 A.D.,after the death of prophetMohammed. Ommayya Khalifas strove for the spread of Islam. Within onecentury the expansin of Islam resulted in the downfallof Byzantine and Sassanid empires. TheMuslims occoupied Syria,Iran,Mesoopotamia. Damascus became the caitals of new empire.,instead of Madina. The Arabs and Turks contributed a lot for the spread of Islam. The Turks infused the spirit of power and dominatin while the Arabs endowed it with art and architecture. The conquest of Sind by Arabs in the 8th Century A.D and the deep incursin of Turks in the 11th,12th and 13th enturies A.D. into India,resulted in the expansin of Muslim rule and the spread of Islam The Arabs were captivated bythe richness of Indian culture. They learnt Astronomy, Medicine and Philosophyfrom the Brahmins and the Buddhist Monks. The Arabs in turn,carried this knowledge to Europe. There is a saying that the numerology learnt BYT THE Europeans from Arabs was first learnt by them Indians. In the 8thCentury A.D.the arab scholars took the tenets of the Brahmi philosophy from India to Babhdad and translated them intoaRabic. From those works they studied Astronomy systematically and Mastered it. The Harron Khalifas invited Indian scholars to Baghdad got the books on medicine,Astrology and philosophy translated into aRabic. They even appointed Hindu doctors intheir Hositals and Medical Colleges. The Arabs were greatly influenced bythe Hindudoctors intheir Hospitals and Medical Colleges. The semi-circular shapes of theshines inHindutemples were taken as models for designing themosques and tomgbs of the muslims. ManyArab students learnt Sanskrit inHindu Universitites and translated several Sanskrit works into Arabic. The Indian administrative principles and the religious tolerance of hindus was greatlyappreciated by Arabs. Theyt adoptd these principles but spread them also in Europe. The Arabs virtually functioned as cultural ambassadors of India. The contacts maintained byMuslims with India,resulted in the fusin of Indo-Muslim art manifested in the variety of Indian Art and Architecture. By the 7th century A.d. the Muslims conqured almost all the holy places of Christians ot spread Islam. The attempts made byChristians to reconquer these places are called crusades. In these wars the Christian soldiers fought by wearing the cross. In the year 1095,Pope Urban II,started them ovement of reconquering theholyplaces of Christians These holy wars were fought inmanystages. They were only related to religin. The nobles whole-heartedlyarticipated in these wars and eceived full co-operatin form the kings. The federal system alsoencouraged these wars, which were fought with fll religious fervour. Thew priests,the feudal lords participated with great enthusiasm. The rulers of Byzantine were ready totake advantage of a anarchic conditions in the Arab countries. But the wars could not fulfil the objectives of the crusaders.
