The Golden ration
One ratio that diden?t upset the Greeks was the ratio of
the Golden section. In fact,it was ratio that they valued
greatly,considering it tobe a manifestatin of the divine.
They called it the divine proportion. What is this
specialratio? It is 1.61803:1(approximately).1.618 is
alsoknown as the golden mean,or phi-not to bemixed
upwiththe ratiopi. Insect segments and things as strange
as the ratioof the number of female honeybees ina hive to
thenumber of males ina hive also approachthis interesting
number. Manyof thehuman body?s proportional ratio?s are
also close to 1.618:the distane form thetip of your head
tothefloor divided bythe distance fromyur naveltot
hefloor;the distance fromyour shoulder to your fingertips
divided bythe distancefrom your elbow to your
fingertips;the distance form yur hiptothe floor divided
bythe distance fromyur knee to the floor. The ratio of the
height of the Great Pyramid inEgypt(at Gizeh)divided byhalf
of the length of the base is 1.618:1. the height of the
Parthenon in Greece divided by the bse length conforms to
the Golden sections. It?s not just ancient architects wo
were obsesses withthis ratio. It often occurs in
nature:next time you pick up a shell the beach,see if the
ratio diameter of each spiralonthe shell to the diameter of
the next spiralis in this ratio. The rows of petals in
manyflowers ?the rotation of consecutive whorls of petals
in a sunflower,for example-follow this pecial spiral. The
arrangements of leaves on branches and the scales
