How Fiona got her flaming feathers
Long ago,birds were invisible creatures with feathers as
colourless as air,people heard their chirping as air.
People heard their chirping and said,?What a beautiful
sound. Itmust be angels speaking. ?But when theyheard the
hoot of the owl theywere not so sure. ?It must be anevil
spirit,?they said,and lived in fear of thenight. So
gaia,the spirit of the earth,dipped a paintbrush in the
rainbow andpainted everybird. Now people oculd see the
birds and were no longer scared. ?That?s a job well
done,?said Gaia. But she had missed one bird-Fiona the
flamingo,Fiona,now came ot Gaia. ?All the Birds look
beautifu,?Said Fiona. ?What about me,Gia?What colours will
give me? Horror of horrors! Gaia had used up all the
coours. What was she todo? ?Oh dear,?she said. ?Perhaps
you could borrow some coours from the other
animnals,Fiona.? Fiona flew ooff at once to search.
Butnight was falling and everyone was asleep. So the
flamingo settled down under a ree to wait the morning.
Suddenly a panther leapt offa branch. He had a silky black
coat,and amber eyes thtglowed ike gold in the dark. What a
beautiful creature,thought Fiona. Perhaps he would
help. ?Mr.Panther,would you lendme some black colour for
my feathers? She asked. The panther jumped in fear. His
black tail swished against Fiona?s beak and left a streak
of black on thetiop. ?Oh dear,?said Fiona. ?How odd I
look now.? Day dawned and the sun?s rays painted the
clouds yellow,or ange andpink. ?Why,I?ll ask the clouds
tolend me their colours,? cried Fiona. She flow towards
the lcouds. But before she oculd reachthem,the sun grew
hotter and brighter,the clouds turned white and dissolved.
Fina flew toher favourite pond and looked at her
reflectin. Allshe could see was a little black
smudge,floating inmid air. Tears slid down her beakand
into the pond. ?Tellme what the mater is,?said he rose
plant. Fina told her the sad tale. The rose plant said,?I
canhelp you. But you must help me in return.? ?I?lldo
whateer you ask.? ?I?ll giveyou red form my roses,if you
will lendme the tips of your talons to use as throns.?
Fina stuck her beak into the red rose blossoms. Her
feathers grew a blush pink. The red rose grew pale unti it
was pink. ?That?s quite enough,?said therose bush. ?Now
may I have yur talons? Fiona broke off the tips of her
talons and fastened them to the bush. The plant was
pleased. And that is why,to this very day,flamingos hide
their talons while theyfish,and why pink rose bushes have
thorns.
