The Carpetbaggers
(Harold Robbins)
Jonas Cord was born rich and spoiled by his father the owner of Cord Explosives. He lived a life of leisure dating girls and getting some of them pregnant and his father always had his lawyer pay them off without much scandal. As his mother was gone a while back, Nevada Smith came into their life when he was five. He came looking for a job and Jonas Sr. hired him to teach his son how to ride and he lived with them and became a surrogate father to Jonas. One day he met a girl, Rina Marlowe at a party and fell in love with her. He took her home to his father and ask his permission to marry her but his father told him he was too young and Jonas Sr. ended up marrying her instead. He hated his father for that. One day his current girlfriend had an abortion and he took her to hospital for she was bleeding. She died and he was there and could not avoid the scandal. The parents of the girl went to his father for money and he had an argument with him and the father had a stroke and died on the spot. Only 21, he grew up overnight as he took control of the business including the parents of the girl who withdrew their claim when he told him it was his wife's idea to get the daughter pregnant so he could marry her and be rich. He wanted to marry Rina but she declined and left. Nevada Smith left too, telling him he got nothing more to do and gave back the shares in the company Jonas Sr. gave to him. He went back to Las Vegas to take care of his show business which was unknown to Jonas. He was actually a fugitive and his identity was accidentally discovered by the father and son but they trusted him. Rina later joined him there. After a while Nevada's cowboy skill was discovered while watching a shooting of a western film. He was featured into a western film and that movie was a success. His business and moviemaking business encountered funding problems and Rina talked Jonas into getting involved and he did on the condition that they give all decision-making to him. That was how Rina was discovered because the soundman did not like the voice of the lead star and Jonas listened and agreed. Rina was cast into the mould that Jonas wanted her to be and she became a star. She later married Nevada but they divorced later. Nevada's career was finished by then as western movies were on the wane. Meanwhile Monica Winthrop became his girlfriend and unknown to Jonas was her father Amos one of the guys involved with the company he was acquiring. Amos was an expert in designing and building airplanes. He married Monica soon and after two weeks she became pregnant and bloated and she looked more advanced in her pregnancy than normal. Jonas thought the baby was not his. They got divorced soon after and Amos negotiated a big settlement in revenge for Jonas for an unfavourable business deal he had with him previously. Monica gave all the money to him and he squandered it. Later Rina was to die in Jonas arms as she had an incurable illness without finishing the big movie they planned for her. She left her money for Monica's daughter Jo-Ann and told Jonas she was responsible for their marriage break-up. Later on they were able to discover Jenny Denton, a high class hooker and former nurse to replace Rina. In a way they were able to cast her a bit like Rina. Even Jonas was convinced she can be like Rina and made her his mistress and she travelled with her. As the war was on the company needed to build a plane that the government would buy but they needed the services of Amos. It took a while to find him and he refused. Jonas even asked Monica to talk to him. In the end he hired somebody to take him to his hotel and they drugged him. Finally he relented and started to build the plane. It was nearly ready to be tested and they have to work overtime to do it. Jonas wanted to test the plane but Amos would not let him unless he is on the plane too for it was his plane. The plane encountered trouble while they were at sea and crashed. Amos was able to push Jonassafety while he was trapped inside the plane and died. Jonas was rescued and in hospital for some time. They sent him home to recuperate for a while and Nevada and his new wife were there to welcome him home. Monica and Jo-Ann came to visit and she became angry when he still could not see the connection between him and Jo-Ann. She is taller now and looking more like him and her grandfather. Later the family doctor who visited him and Nevada confirmed it and told him everybody but him saw the similrities and knew the truth. Nevada told him that Monica never stopped loving him. He had to catch up with Monica nad Jo-Ann before they board the train home. Later mother and daughter agreed to come back.
