Actors of the animal world
Manyanimals, birds and insects have developed the art of
camouflage to eprfectin. This is a skill theyhae developed
for their survival. birds donot eat the monarch
butterfly, because it s main diet is them ilkweed
plant, whichis poisonous. The civeroy butterfly copies the
monarch?s orange and blackcolour patterns so well that
birds are deceived intobelieving that they are monarchs!
Another interesting butterfly has carried the art of
deception to another level-it pretends tohave two heads!
On the hairstreak butterfly?s lower hind wings are spots
that look like large eyes, and growths that look like
antennae, giving the illusion that the butterfly has another
head. When the hairstreak moves its wings, predators are
tricked into believing that they have stumbled upon a much
larger, and moe threatening, creature than a mere
butterfly. Among sea creatures, the octopus can assume the
shape and form of many other sea creatures, byelongating and
bunching its tentacles. One particular species of octopus
is os clever withits disgise that it is called the mimic
octopus. This fascinating creaeture has the ability
toalter its shape, form and coloyr pattern to mimi up to
eight other sea creatures. It chooses which disguise to
use depending on its surroundings and the proximity of
enemies. The Harlequin snake eel mimics the banded sea
snake, an extremely toxic species that wears conspicuous
black and white colours. The Africian widow bird uses
mimicry to make the Estrildid Finch do all its work. When
it is time for a female. Widow Bird tolayher eggs, she
finds the nest of an estrildid Finch and lays her eggs
init. The Baby Widow birds look exactly like Estrildid
Finch Chicks. They have the same colours, and even act and
sound the same. This means that as they grow up in with
chicks of another species,no one,not even the mother
bird, will ever be able totellthem apart.
