25-year Low In A Measure Of Well-being
(Nick Ravo)
Have you ever wondered what our country will be like in the far out future, or maybe even in a few years? When we compare our country now to our country thirty years ago, which is better? Granted, our technology and education are hitting among the highest points in our history, but what about our health, perhaps the most important factor of all? If you were guessing our health isn?t so hot, you?re right. When you think about the word health, however, most of you probably are thinking about your physical being, but that is not all that contributes to our health. There are many other types of health such as emotional, occupational, environmental, sexual, etc. All of these and many more contribute to out countrie's health being "out of shape." According to statistics, our country?s health hasn?t been this bad since 1994, so what are we doing differently? Adolescent health, people below the age of 18, have the worst health at the present time, below every other age group, but why? Could this problem be due to our dramatic change in lifestyle, or maybe the problem lies even more in-depth. I, personally, think that our lack of health in children is due to something much worse. Think back to our children?s lives thirty years ago, and compare it to now. There are many more problems facing our youth today, including family separation, child abuse, drug abuse, sexual abuse, and the list could go on and on. Things like those listed aren?t something that go unnoticed in the victim?s life. For many people, recovering from such takes months, years, and even a life time through which they may suffer from anxiety, depression, or even suicidal thoughts. Think about it. When something traumatic happens in your life, you don?t just get over it within days, do you? It only makes sense that large amounts of change in one?s life require large amounts of time to heal, but that is never a bad thing. Children are, of course, the most exposed to all of this because they do not know how to get out of such things. They can?t stop divorce, or rape, or abuse; they can?t even see it coming. Yet when it strikes, our country?s citizens expect them to just go on as if nothing ever happened. Who in their right might could ask that, honestly? If you knew a child that was abused both physically and sexually by her father after losing her mother, could you tell her to move on and pretend it never happened and mean it? Of course not, so why do we do it? Why is our country?s youth so "unfit" when it comes time to health you ask. Well, what are we doing to solve all the problems that are occurring? Currently, health experts are saying that our problems in youth will only lead to more problems with our country in the future, but how much time is our national and state government devoting to solving this, practically none. Whether it be a form of abuse or even a different sort of preventable trauma, it is ridiculous to see how much our country is doing to prevent such things. The fact that our country is predicting a stronger and better future is almost unimaginable. By refusing to devote their time to perhaps the most important part of our country, our future rulers, our wonderful youth, what does that say about us? Our country?s future is at stake here, but yet we refuse to help those in need of it. We refuse to try to prevent things that we can live without, so that being said, what do you think our country will be like in the far out future, or maybe even in a few years?
