What is Romantisicm?

While the Romantic Movement is often described as a reactin
to the ool and collected ethos of Neo-classicism,the
twoschools of thought ruled Eurpoe for a long time and
often there were artists whopractised both styles at
different stages of their career or even merged styles.
Romantic is derived from the romanes of the middle ages. A
romantic work is characterized byindividualism and
subjectivity. Emotion(bordering on themelodramatic)gains
precedence over the rational and nature is celebrated in
its wild form. The occult and gothic held a special
fascinatin for the romantics. The romantic era sees the
birth of the artist as a genious and supreme individual
creator. The focus was on imagination and irrationality, a
revelling in nostalgia and a fascination for the exotica
and folklore. The formal rules of art or literature did nt
matter to the artist. Artists of the romantic school
include Caspar David Friedrich(he would paint solitary
figures against ruins with the elements in all their
fury),John Constable,J.M.W.Turner and William Blake. The
Pre-Raphaelites and the Symbolosts are the immediate
successor to the Romantic Movement even though
impressionism also finds its roots inRomantiicism. An the
idea of the artist as a possessed genius that is poular
tothis day also finds its beginnings in this intellectual
movement that was current form the late 18th century to
themed-19th century
