Richard Gere
(Peter Garrick)
Richard Gere, the reluctant superstar and heartthrob, rose to stardom in the 80's with movies 'American Gigolo', 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and one of his blockbusters was 'Pretty Woman'. As well as a movie star he is also known as a practicing Buddhist and an avid supporter of the Dalai Lama. He was one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelor for a while having long term relationships with Penelope Milford, another actress on the early stage of his career and later with Sylvia Martin, a Brazilian painter and former model. He also had a short term relationship with Sophia, the Duchess of Hpasburg. His next relationship was with Cindy Crawford, the top model at that time she was introduced to him at a party for Elton John. They dated secretly until they appeared together in 1990 at the Academy awards. They married in December, 1991. They continued with their respective careers and owned several homes and as they are both busy with their careers, it must have contributed to the breakdown of their marriage. The marriage lasted 3 years and they divorced in December, 1994. Before the divorce, there were rumours circulating that their marriage was a sham and questions about their sexuality. Gere never admitted nor denied these rumours hoping that it will just die down. Born in 1949 in Philadelhia from a dairy farming family, they moved to Syracuse near Lake Ontario when his father became an insurance salesman. His family had no inkling whatsoever that he would one day be a bankable star. Coming from a musical family, he can play the trumpet, the piano and even wrote music for plays in school. That was how he accepted small parts in school plays. He got an athletics scholarship from the University of Massachussetts where he studied drama. A professor at the university noticed his acting talent and asked him to audition for 'Hamlet'. He got tired of university much to the disappointment of his parents after two years and went off with Bill Roberts to Seattle. He landed some small roles and had to supplement his income with his musical talents. He formed a band with some guys he met but was not succesful.Theatre was his life for a while and he did not display any interest in movies until he was twenty six. He was chosen to play opposite Diane Keaton in 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar'. After John Travolta rejected 'American Gigolo' which was originally offered to him, he accepted the role for a much smaller pay. That was the start of him being typecast as a sex symbol and refused most offers and went back to theatre which he loves doing even if it did not give him as much money as making movies. He did not want any of Travolta's rejects until Ed Limato was able to convince him to accept 'An Officer and a Gentleman'. It turned out to be the biggest hit of the year and he turned into a star. But he has always been his own man, an individual unbound by rules and would take a long time to convince to take similar roles. He hated the press so much and most of the time he was rude and uncooperative when the interview was about his personal life. He hated the superstar status and Hollywood which made him rich and famous. To others, he portrays a man full of contradictions. He converted to Buddhism when he met the Dalai Lama and occasionally went to Tibet for sometime and made himself scarce. As his popularity and fortune grew, he became more fussy about the films he wants to make. He did not return to the theatre and sometimes would take a pay cut to make a movie if he likes it and has a say in the scenes and setting of the film. If he likes the character too, he would accept the role. He shows that money is not only his number one motivation to make a film. He refused to follow the trend when action films were popular and had rejected the film 'Die Hard' which was offered to him first before being offered to Bruse Willis and was a big blockbuster. He has also turned down 'Wall Street' which Michael Douglas accepted and won aas not made any movies in five years while raising funds for Tibet and other humanitarian causes. He was convinced to make 'Internal Affairs' and 'Pretty Woman' with Julia Roberts which was the movie of the year and grossed $315million. He made the movie 'Sommersby' with Jodie Foster which was also a departure from his previous roles and the film grossed $150 million. Other movies were not so succesful. All throughout his career life he struggled with the media for intruding into his private life and worked hard for what he believed in including Tibetan and other humanitarian causes. Sadly, he has not come to terms with the fact that being in movies meant being public property at times and he has to face the fact that the media will always be there to hound him whether he likes it or not and the more he shuns them the more thy pursue his private life.
