Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
(Roald Dahl)
Charlie Bucket's family; four grandparents, two parents and himself live in poverty in a one bedroom shack. They eat cabbage soup nearly every day, and the gradpaerants are forced to share one bed. In Charlie's town, there is a run down old factory, owned by famous chocolatatier Willy Wonka. The factory closed down before Charlie's town, because Wonka was tired of spys inside the factory stealing his top secret recipies. Charlie often stops outside the factory, dreaming of going inside. Then one day, without warning, the factory begins running again, and an announcement is made. Five golden tickets have been placed in chocolate bars, and distributed throughout the world. The lucky five who find the tickets, will win a tour of the factory, and a life time's supply of chocolate! The tickets are won by Augustus Gloop, a greedy fat little boy. Veruca Salt, a rich spoilt brat. Mike Teevee, obsessed with television. Violet Beaureguard a determined over acheiver, and a mystery winner, who prefers to stay anonymous. Charlie is deeply disapointed, as he and his Grandpa Joe have spent their spare money on the hopes of finding a ticket. The anymous winner turns out to be a fake, and after finding a penny in the gutter, Charlie wins the ticket. Grandpa Joe, who has been bedridden for years learns to walk again so he can accompany Charlie to the factory, having always been a wonka fan himself. After winning the ticket, Charlie is approached by Slugworth the man who tried to stael Wonka's recipies, as were the other four. He offers Charlie money for his family if he brings him a 'neverending gobstopper' from the wonka factory Willy Wonka is an odd man. His factory is magical and mysterious, like a huge playground. The children lick tasty wallpaper, Charlie drinks lemonade which causes him to float, they see some of Wonka's 'secret ingredients' (a boot and an alarm clock) But, before long, in an 'edible garden' Augustus, greedily feeding from a chocolate waterfall, falls in. Wonka claims that his workers are called OOmpa Loompa's, strange alien men from another planet. They lead Mrs Gloop away to fetch her son. Next to leave the tour is Violet, after greedily snatching a new type of 'full meal' gum (she holds a gum chewing record) and filling with the juice from the desert. The children are given the never ending gobstoppers. But Veruca, being the spoilt little brat that she is, wants one of Wonka's cocolate egg laying gooses. She falls into the egg bin chute, after the gooses dub her a 'bad egg'. Mike Teevee takes interest in Wonkervision, Wonka's technology that allows him to send chocolate through the television. He tries to send himself, but ends up shrunk to the size of a pencil. Wonka retreats sadly to his office, telling Charlie and Grandpa Joe the tour is over. Charlie gives Wonka the gobstopper, not wanting to betray his trust. Wonka jumps up in joy - he'd hired 'Slugworth' to try and weed out the best possible, most honest child to become the heir to the Wonka fortune. He invites Charlie and his family to come live in the factory with him, and they live happy ever after.
