Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Jane Austen is a name that most males do not identify with. They consider her writing to be the soft romantic stuff that females associate with. How wrong they can be.

Take Pride and Prejudice for example. Yes, agreed that the novel revolves on romance and marriage. Yet, it reveals so much about the culture and history of her period. It shows how class dominated England was; how concerned people were with notions of rank and money and what was the general status of women and marriage in society.

Pride and Prejudice is the story of a moderately well off family. Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters. The story revolves around the preoccupation with marriage that people had in those days. The very match of Mr and Mrs Bennet is an irony and Ms Austen shows how an improper match in which minds do not meet can be disastrous for not only the husband and wife but also their children. In a way, it shows a futuristic thinking, as that is what one seeks in a marriage today. She questions the institution of marriage and shows that a good marriage must be based on a true meeting of minds.

Amongst the daughters-, Elizabeth and Jane have the most colorful personalities with Elizabeth shadowing Jane. Her character, wit and intelligence make her a much-loved heroine. Add to it the fact that a man as Darcy (who is rich, proud and very much aware of his status) falls for her adds to her popularity. Elizabeth is a strong independent girl who does not compromise on her values and desires just to get married. She waits for the right person, whom she respects and connects with.

Ms Austen so well describes the follies of human nature and the classic examples are Mrs Bennet and Mr William Collins. She also portrays the deceptive side of human nature in the character of Wickham. The amiable personality is the character of Bingley. The book portrays a cross section of psyches and individuals. She rightly denounces many prevailing beliefs and customs and does in a subtle and humorous manner.

Pride and Prejudice is a light humorous book depicting the thoughts, values, beliefs and cultures of that period. Yet, the descriptions of marriages and soulmates be it for a man or a woman are as valid today. .
