Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
(Hunter S. Thompson)

Publicidade
In his book, Hunter S. Thompson writes about a trip to Las Vegas with his lawyer Dr Gonzo and a suitcase full of all imaginable drugs. Actually, Hunter S. Thompson alias Raoul Duke was just supposed to write an article for a sports magazine about the Mint 400, a car race through the desert. But after consuming the drugs with his lawyer excessively, the race becomes a minor matter - they write an article anyway (a wonderful example of pure gonzo journalism). This means that the two main characters experience a crazy, insane, absurd and also violent trip through Las Vegas, a really crazy city at the time of the hippie movement. They leave devastated hotel rooms and shocked guests, crashed cars and confused hoteliers, frightened cleaning ladies, oblivious cops and scared hitch hikers. Even if all that sounds unbelievable, everything is based on true stories. Hunter S. Thompson really experienced everything that way and this is what makes the book so interesting, it provides an insight into the USA of the 1960s and 70s. Despite the hilarious descriptions, Thompson manages to show the dark and violent sides of society in his funny and readable style. This book is the most famous work by the inventor of "gonzo journalism," most people might have heard the original English title "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or have seen the cult movie with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. Those who have seen the movie, should also read the book to better understand some of the scenes. Hunter S. Thompson was working as a journalist before he published his first book "Hell's Angels." He becomes a cult figure of the hippie movement because he never minces matters but tells stories of his own experience. On February 20, 2005, Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide in his home in Colorado. At his funeral, his last wish was fulfilled to blow his ashes into the sky with fireworks.
