Diamond Is Seeker
(p.naga prasad)
Diamond is seeker?s curse A black diamond, supposedly taken from an idol in ta temple near Pondicherry, which was on display recently at the Natural history Museum at London, has re-kindled interest in the history of ancient temples in this part of the country. A professor in Pndicherry has, with out success, attempted to trace the history of the diamond. Called a ?cursed?stone, legend has it that a monk removed the original 195-carat black diamond from an idol in a temple near Pondicherry, probably in the 12th century, inviting the wrath of God. Subsecquently, the legend goes, a curse fell on all those who possessed the diamond. It is said that the diamond was bought by two Russian princess who committed suicide. It was then called as the Orlov diamond after the Russian prince who had bought it. Later, as the story goes, the diamond went into the hands of a diamond went into the hands of a diamond merchant who committed suicide from the top floor of a building in New York. The search for the temple where the deity was once adorned by the diamond is not easy as there are many ancient temples around pondicherry, including the thirumoolesthanam temple in Bahour,Chandramouleeswarar temple I thiruvakarai,Veeranarayana Azhwar Temple, Thirubhubanai,Kundakuzhi temple in Madagadipet,Panchanatheesawara Temple in Thiruarachi and shiva temple in Koliyanur. The researchers have come across an almost 800-year-old mahakaleeswarar temple in Irumbaiin Villupuram district, which they feelmay be the temple they are looking for as it is the only which also tells a tale of a curse similar to the one associated with the diamond. Legend has it that sage Kazhuveli who lived in the 12thcentury was enraged when villagers laughed at him for coming to the rescue of a devadasi who fell while dancing in this temple and cursed them. As a resulr, the lingam of lord Shiva(which could hae been adorned by the diamond)in the temple blew up into pieces but later was reassembled after the king and illagers pleaded with the sage to take back his curse. A team led byepigraphist Dr.Vijay Venugopal,Former history professor of Madurai Kamaraj Univiersity, visited the temple last week to gather information about the temple and establish a link,if any, with the cursed balck diamond. The team photographed inscriptions on the walls of the temple and collected other vital information available to make a detailed study about the history of the temple with specialreference to the diamond.
