HowdidMount
Everestcometobe calledso? In Nepal the Mountain is called
Sagarmatha while inTibet it is called Chomolangma
or ?Mother of the Universe?. The Mountain was given its
English name by Sir Andrew Waugh, the Britishsurveyor-
general of India,in 186, when it was first determined to be
the highest peak in the world, till 1865,it was known simply
as peakXV. Both Nepal and Tibet were closed to
foreigntravel at the time, and Andrew Waugh didn?t know the
local name of the mountain. So waughchose to name
themountainafter Sir George Everest,his
predecessor,conotroversy still rages about the
nameofthemountain. The Chinese people?s dailynewspaper
published an article in 2002 attacking the continued use of
the English name for themountaininthe western
world, insisting that it should be referred tobyits Tibetan
name. When was the height of Everest first measured?
Radhanath sikdar, an Indian mathematician and surveyor from
benga, was thefirsttoidentifyeverest as the world?s highest
peak in1852,using trigonometric calculations based on
measurements made withtelescopic measurements made
withtelescopic measurements form 240km awayinindia. The
height of themountainwasfirst calculated at over 30,000
ft,beforelater,more precisemeasurements determined it
wasn?t htathigh. What is the latest measurementof everest
height? On may 22,2005,the people Republic of China?s
everest expedition team ascended to thetop of themountai.
After severalmonths of complicated measurement and
calculation,on october 9,,2005,china?s state bureau of
surveying and mapping officially announced the height of
everest as 8,844.43m. Thisnew height is based on the
highest point of the actual rock andnot on the snow andice
that sits ontop of that rock on the summit. They claim it
is themost accurate measurement of Everest?s height to
date. It was measured in1856 at 29,000 ft(8,839 m),but
declaredto be 29,002ft(8.840m)high. The arbitrary addition
of 2 ft(0.6m)was to avoid the impression that an exact
height of 29,000 ft was nothing morethan a rounded
estimate.
