All of the nymphs were in love with him, particularly one named Echo, but he just ignored them. Despaired Echo asked Afrodith for punishment for Narcissus. During looking into water's mirror he felt in love with himself and he died from vain longing. That way after Narcissus stayed the flower named his name, and after Echo the voice expanding. Narcissus is an impersonation of an egoistic, egocentric and vainglorious human - and a person like anyone from us.
