Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's one of the most acclaimed novels - the other one being Emma. The novel is hailed as a great classical work. Its original draft was refused to be published. It was revised and renamed by Austen resulting in the final publication. The revision by the author herself during her lifetime results in an excellent organization of the plot as the loose ends may have been tightened up.

It is a classic story of a rich man attracted to a middle class lady. However, unlike Indian movies and some other novels, he is not stopped by his parents (as they are already dead) but his own pride comes in the way of his love, Elizabeth. Her low links (by birth) prevent him from thinking of her as a prospective wife.

Certain sequence of events led him to a burning desire which eventually overcame his Pride and he finally proposed to Elizabeth in a haughty way. His words being "I have tried very hard to supress my desire to get you as my wife keeping in view your ill behaved mother and your low links but have failed." He was promptly refused partly due to his arrogance and partly due to Elizabeth's prejudiced opinions against him.

But his desire overcame him to such an extent that he was willing to do anything for her inspite of a categorical denial the first time he proposed leaving little hope of reconcillation. He took great pains to do her various favors concealing his identity.

Finally, she came to know about them and also due to some coincidences, her prejudices against him melted away. She unconsciously started acting in a way he would have liked her to behave and developed a strong affinity towards him. Finally, she was proposed a second time and Darcy (the man) ans Elizabeth married each other. There are some other characters ( Elizabeth's sisters, Darcy's sister etc.) who are central to plot and their stories are also intertwined delicately.

The beauty of depiction and the deep psychological analysis of the characters set the novel apart from ordinary works. It is a must read for everyone fond of reading.
