The Lion And The Jewel

The lion in this play is Baroka the Bale of ILUJINLE and Sidi, the chief character of this play is the jewel. She is a maiden very pretty .Lakunle who is a school teacher is in love with Sidi. Baroka, Bale of Ilujinle ,is equally in love with her and wants her for marriage. The Bale is rich, has many wives and known to be very deceitful or fox-like. He is also corrupt. He uses his position to expliot the poor villagers for his egoism. Lakunle is educated in the western ways and makes no pretence in his anger for his tradition. Sidi well tutored in the tradional rules of the people. This is what set the conflict of this play.
Lakunle and Baroka are in a struggle to have Sidi the village maiden. Lakunle hates all what tradition states concerning marriage. Bride price and other traditional rites that go with marriage. Lakunle delay or refusal to fulfill these rites delays his marriage with Sidi.
Baroka the village Bale, capitalises on this and invents a trick and lures Sidi into sex. Sidi is made to believe that Baroka's genetal organ is no more functioning. She is told this by Baroka's first wife. She conivince Sidi to go and make a mockery of Baroka. It is in the process of this that Baroka is able to have sex with her.
Baroka has succeeded in breaking her virginity. Sidi her no choice than to marry Baroka. Lakunle insist on marrying her but Sidi turns him down. The play ends with singers and dancers seizing the stage. This play is very interesting
