Shobhaa De In 'spouse' : The Writer I Know
(R.Sathish)
Shobhaa De in 'Spouse' : The writer i know I love Shobhaa De. I do not have any hesitation in admitting that. From my childhood i fancied reading Shobhaa De. I felt she is a lioness, unafraid of male chauvnists, ready to flag humans to the zenith of independence and free will. What i liked the most was her shyless bold attitude. I loved her for the attraction in her personality as perceived by me. Today, I got an oppurtunity to read 25 pages of her novel 'Spouse'. Woman discuss sex, she says woman fake orgasm. I see the will of humanity in this seemingly obscene sentence. I see the power to express clearly, the will to speak truth, the will to propagate truth and the desire to remain sane. For my extremists pretences, she turned out to be very moderate and yet she did not disappoint in her sane words. 'Do not talk about your old love to your new spouse.' Pompous are those, blind in words, lacking in emphathy to discuss old affiliations. A person who can write suggestively for 250 pages about marriage in realistic manner is truly meritorious. Having a succesful second marriage her advices on ex are very practical. The book talks about Sex, Divorce and what not, every perceivable topic is covered. It is like reading a subject on marriage. Few stories here and there would have made the book more intresting. Having a tough marriage i read with religious zeal. She very well advises the consequences of infidelity. My God how many advices to read. My sbconscious is not ready to accept too much advices. The book misses spark , maybe her life too. What a dull looking photo in the front cover, though she looks very sexy in the back cover. This is my second review of this book, after reading most of it. Points, Points and Points of advice at the end of every chapter. Expanded points as contents of these chapters. I will not say it is very dull, but it could be lovelier. For a feminist author, the book is very realistic. Still, How much to remember when reading as a Novel? Shobha will make a very good relationship teacher. Amazing, How much she knows about the nuptial agreement. She ends the novel with "Who needs the marriage? I do." This could be a very good text book for marriage counsellees, a book to prevent divorces. A must read for any married/ to be married adult.
