Cliente
(Josiane Balasko)
Cliente, Josiane Balasko?s first novel Josiane Balasko is a well-known actress and film director but her role as an author is a new one - only 2 years old. Indeed, she published her first novel called ?Cliente? in December 2003 through the French publishing house Fayard. Writing a novel is not a new feather she wished to put on her cap but a result of a series of circumstances that pushed her to bring out her book. Josiane Balasko had a new idea for a screenplay but it was rejected everywhere ? by film producer as well as television producers. Her script was thought to be too shocking and inappropriate. So she revised and edited her screenplay to make it into a book titled ?Cliente? which was published by Fayard in December 2003. As is her wont, Josiane Balasko loves to tackle subjects that disturb, which could shock the mentality of certain people because they consider that ?if the subject disturbs, it must be interesting?. What disturbed the people to whom she presented the idea of her book is that it takes up the theme of male prostitution and its clients. It is the inverse of what one expects in the normal course of things. The story revolves around a female presenter of a tele-shopping programme, who buys the services of young gigolos purely for satisfying her sexual needs. But she gets attached to one of these young men who is not a professional but a casual worker who does this for making both ends meet at the end of the month. The wife of the young man and the ?client? finally meet to fight over this man each one of whom knows one facet of this man. Despite the subject, which could be shocking, this book is a reminder of a certain morality and of the economic context in which our country is currently living. Many strong themes are thus taken up in this book like love, prostitution, economic misery and the relationship between an individual and money. These themes are tackled with a lot of frankness and realism. How will the « cliente » end up ? It is up to you to discover that by reading this excellent book with at times grating humour but with a lot of emotions and sentiment. As the story progresses one gets slowly attached to the 3 main characters and one ponders over man-woman relations and over the relationship that a women have with pleasure and sexuality.
