Lubeck," The Venice Of Germany."
(A.J. Hughes)
I nicknamed the wonderful City of Lubeck ? The Venice of Germany?, during the time I lived their. The City centre is an island surrounded by water, with 11 bridges leading in roads from the surrounding suburbs. With cobbled streets and elegant passageways leading off one another, the tourist will never feel lost in this small but delightful City with a population of some 230,000 inhabitants, as the City dates back to 1143 A.D. The Holstengate is a twin tower structure with a arched passageway and is one of the gateways into the City. The 7 spires of the 5 churches dominate the City skyline, each with the same aqua-tiled roofs and rusty looking brickwork, that cleverly blend in with the more up to date buildings, constructed after the heavy bombing Lubeck endured during the Second World War, though 3 of the churches have had to restructures with new brickwork, clearly noticeable to the visiting tourist. The nearby beach resort of Travemunde as from July to September, the wonderful Sand Sculptures and with an entrance fee of 8 euros for adults and 3 euros for children, is well worth paying a visit to. During the festive period, Lubeck?s Christ kindle market brings people flocking in their thousands to browse the many stalls selling Christmas decorations, gifts and lots more items you could never find in the big stores. Available to keep out the winter chill while enjoying the festivities, is a large selection of bratwurst sausages, washed down with delicious hot wine, while for the children and made in the local Niederegger chocolate factory, a large choice and tasty range of chocolate and marzipan. Opposite the Holstengate, a outdoor ice-rink was constructed and with an entrance fee of 5 euros you could tire out the kids, while you finish off some last minute Christmas shopping. Across from the ice-rink is the highly acclaimed ice World,? a bit like the summer version of the sand sculptures,? though this time the sculptures are made out of ice and is excellent value for all the family, with an entrance fee of 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children. Close to the City are the excellent parks of Stadtpark and Dragerpark. During the summer months Dragerpark as a beach, where you can relax by the river Wakenitz, one of many rivers which flow through Lubeck. Making this City, a must visit place to any tourist visiting northern Germany in the near future.
