The Suzuki Method
(Jack Fryer)
As the extraordinary achievements of Suzuki-taught children become better known, more and more parents are giving their children the advantages of his methods. Suzuki believed that every child has musical talent and this should be nurtured from the earliest age. His aim was not to create scores of professional musicians but rather use music as the stimulus which will awaken latent musical abilities and give the child a flying start to life. In Suzuki?s words, understanding reading is not enough. Under his methods, it is the secondary part of any lesson. In general, pupils first listen to a few pieces which they enjoy. The lesson ends with students playing the piece without reference to sheet music. In between a small period of time is spent reading music. Jack Fryer, one of the pioneers of Suzuki teaching in Britain, describes how parents can apply Suzuki?s teaching from the very birth of their child. All the essential steps are explained, with advice on types of music, suitable instruments, the importance of parental commitment, and where to find professional tuition.
