This novel is about two workers, Lennie and George. Lennie is a mentally challenged man whose size and unawareness gets him in a lot of trouble. George is his friend and partner who is a father like character to Lennie. The story starts as the two men starting off for new job. Lennie has been accused of rape after touching a woman?s dress. George tries to keep Lennie in line and tells him all about what they will have once they make their fortune. Lennie is very excited by an idea of having his own place where he can be put in charge of taking care of the rabbits.
They come across a bunkhouse in the way and find work there. The boss finds it a little disturbing the George speaks on behalf of Lennie but lets them have the job none the less. Curly is enemy of this story, he is as short man who hates men larger then himself and is also very jealous of men around his new wife. Curly starts many fights with George and Lennie. Lennie gets the upper hand one day, not knowing his own strength and breaks Curly?s hand after George tells Lennie to do so.
Lennie?s strength does get him into much trouble, he kills a mouse and a puppy the one of the men gives him. Later in the story Curley?s wife flirts with Lennie and begins to scream when Lennie touches her hair. Lennie afraid George will not let him tend the rabbits if she continues to scream, so he tries to hush her up, unknowingly killing her.
Finding Curly?s wife one of the men tells George and has him look for Lennie before the other men. The other men would kill Lennie for what he had done. George finds Lennie in a quiet spot in the woods and tells Lennie a story of their future again. George puts a gun to Lennie?s head and shoots without Lennie realizing what has happened.
This is the ultimate story of friendship. There are many symbols and hidden meanings between each chapter. The gentle giant Lennie is not so gentle, but accepted by George because of his disability and his loyalty. George a lazy man finds a brotherhood in this child like beast of a man and uses Lennies strength to help him gain in the world. The ultimate sacrifice was made with the pull of the trigger, allowing his friend to die in peace.
