This story is about a Jewish family in Poland shaken by the war. The indescribably sad and yet moving memories lead Elie, his father, the mother and the younger sister back into a nightmare, to a journey with a cattle freight car to the notorious concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Unfortunately Elie and his father are separated from the mother and sister for ever. The women die in the destruction factories. Elie knew that he would never see his mother and sister again. Marked, shaved and sprayed, Elie and his father work in the camp, being treated like animals. Elie quickly notices that his former strong faith in God has changed. He cannot understand the inhumanities and suffering. He is lacking sufficient, healthy food. He also witnesses atrocities at public executions he will never forget. He is astonished about himself, when he realizes that he prays to the God in whom he stopped to believe in. Elie hurts his foot and is dropped into hospital. He fears that the doctor could amputate his leg. After waking up, he notices that nothing is missing. The rumor circulates that the Red Army moves towards the camp. Believing that the Germans will kill all the inmates, Elie and his father decide to escape. Too late, Elie realizes that the prisoners were simply left behind and soon be freed by the Russian army. In the terrible clashes Elies father is killed. Through the death of his father a feeling of the liberation arises somehow in him. He can never forgive himself these last moments. Elie had to fight at two fronts: With the enemy and also with himself. As the title of the book indicates, this experience is a dark long chapter of Elie?s life. It had changed him forever.
