The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe
(Douglas Adams)

This zany tale kicks off where the last left off, at the restaurant at the end of the universe. Zaphod, Arthur, Trillian and Ford almost spend a complete evening at the restaurant when they receive a call, from Marvin, their maniacally depressed robot that has waited on the planet where they left him for many millions of year, which is now parking cars (the restaurant is on the planet they left him, at least what's left of it). Going to greet him and Zaphod being as he is and always will be, a thief with two heads but only enough brain matter for a babel fish (the universal translator), steals a stunt ship that only has autopilot and is destined to crash into a sun as part of a very popular (and very disliked in some arenas) rock band's most renounded stunt. They are lucky enough to use a half working teleport system on the ship that gets them out of there with little time to spare but leave Marvin behind. I mean, come on, who was going to operate the teleporter? The four get separated and Arthur and Ford, who stay together, end up learning that his ancestors really weren't from the planet earth, explaining much of humanity's mindlessness in the process. It is a great book and will leave you wanting more so if you don't immediately get the next book, well, your loss...
