The Music Of Chance
(Paul Auster)

Publicidade
One is immedietly drawn into the world of the moment, the world of now, of cause and effect and the timing of events in Paul Auster's mesmerising novel, The Music of Chance. It is a book about living in the "now",from moment to moment, and the consequences of decisions that are all made in a moment. The main character,Nashe, after a relationship break-up and unexpected inheritance from an unknown father,is just driving back and forth across the country;heading nowhere in particular, when a Chance meeting with a young man on the road changes everything forever.Nashe sees himself in the young man, Pozzi, takes him in and helps him get straightened out and is convinced by Pozzi, an itinerant gambler,to bankroll him in a poker game with two recluse millionaires,Flower and Stone. It is at this point that things start to get strange, as the decisions the two heroes make put them in a very strange situation.Auster shows us that people take actions, often without knowing why,and the consequences of these actions can be profoundly life-changing, and only later can we sometimes see a pattern, a motive or a reason of any kind.In Flower and Stone (wonderful names),we have a kind of reflection,a mirror to Nashe and Pozzi, two men who's lives were also transformed by chance, and in turn transform the lives of Nashe and Pozzi. The Music of Chance is an exhilarating and disturbing read, and i would highly recommend it.
