The Little Prince
(Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
The Little Prince written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) in 1943 is a classic. It's a fairy tale for children but the inner meanings of the story can only be understood by an adult if anyone. In the story a pilot meets a little boy from a different asteroid who teaches him a lot about life and adulthood. De Saint-Exupéry was a pilot so he can be seen as the adult in the book. Other characters in the book are among others the rose who is said to represent de Saint-Exupéry's wife Consuelo Suncin Sandoval de Gómez. Their marriage was quarrelsome. Extracts from The Little Prince: One can only see well with one's heart. The most important things cannot be seen with eyes. You cannot truly know anything you haven't tamed yourself. - People, the fox said, have guns and they hunt. That's a shame. They also raise chickens. That's the only good thing about them. Would you get us a couple of chickens? - No I wont, said the little prince. I'll get us some friends. - But what does the word tamed mean?? - It's just the kind of boy that the hundred tousand others are. And I don't need you any more than you need me. All I am to you is a fox, similar to hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me we'll need each other. You'll become the only person in my life. And I'll become the only person in your life. The fox fell silent and looked at the little prince for a long while. - Be my guest...tame me! it said. - I would love to, the prince said, but I don't that much time. I have to find friends and learn a lot of things. - You cannot know anything you haven't tamed yourself, the fox said. People don't have time to know anything. They buy ready-made objects from the stores. But when they don't sell friends in stores people no longer have them. Tame me if you really want to have a friend! - What should I do? the little prince asked. - You have to be patient, the fox answered. First you sit on the grass, just like that, away from me. I'll check you out and you say nothing. Misunderstandings are always caused by words. But day after day you can sit a bit closer.
