The Jack Welch Lexicon Of Leadership
(Jeffrey A. Krames)
Introduction The book ?The Jack Welch Lexicon of Leadership? is a dictionary of the initiatives, principles, strategies, the person who has been declared as "the Vince Lombardi of business," "a heroic form of CEO," "the world's greatest business leader," "the manager of the century," and "CEO of the century". The magazine Fortune described him as ?As the most widely admired, studied, and imitated CEO of his time?. He is a leader who led General Electric for two decades as CEO and transformed it into one of history?s most valuable corporations. He is also known as ?Neutron Jack? for one of his first initiatives he implemented as CEO of GE. The book has covered over 250 terms, concepts, strategies and initiatives of the eighth CEO of GE, John Francis Welch, popularly known as Jack Welch in an organized manner. What does this book offer its readers? I?m sure that the title of the book will definitely lure many to take a look at this book. It might also mislead people to think that the book is targeted to managers of an organization. However the truth is that the book is meant for all professionals from low-level to the highest level in an organization. This book cannot be used as a manual for the global initiatives like Six Sigma but can be used as a reference on when and how the change can be implemented can be done. This book can be used as a reference for the techniques that Jack has employed in his organization. For example, the techniques employed to make managers move closer to their sub-ordinates, cost-cutting measures and to approach on acquisitions. The best way to use this book that I would suggest is to read from the first page to the last page in a sequential manner. This way, readers will be able to able to appreciate all the initiatives and ideas that the great leader has employed at GE. The words ?grocery store?, ?Boundaryless?, ?Work-out?, ?learning?, ?Number one, Number two?, ?four E?s of leadership? have been spread out to all the sections of the book which will definitely make a huge impact on the reader?s minds. Some readers might feel that there are too many repetitions in the book; however none of the repetitions are because of author?s inability to avoid them but because of the way how Jack has given meaning to his initiatives and knitted them. Every repetition creates a strong impression on reader?s minds about those terms and on how to be consistent. There exists a perception that managers have to be a decision maker and controller. This book will help the budding managers to change that notion and help them in honing their managerial (rather leadership) skills in a way that would help them to achieve success for themselves and for the organization. The author has not limited himself to provide a dictionary of Jack?s successes through his initiatives. The failures and ?worst mistake of his career? are also been captured in the book which will help the readers to learn a fact that even great leaders have their share of failures. The criticisms he has been subjected to for his cost-cutting measures and how Jack managed prove that they were wrong have also found a place in this book. The author has also provided a vast library of sources to know more about the words of Jack Welch mentioned in this dictionary.
