Judges
(The Bible)
Joshua was a book of victory and sucess, of conquering the so called Promised Land. Judges is the bad news book. After prevailing over the cities of Palestine the nation of Israel started to pay the price for nor having followed God's orders completely. I wonder how the Islamic scholars, that along with Judaism and Christianity have the Old Testament as an inspired (canonic) source, take the God given instructions about what to do with the "locals". The hebrews were supposed to drive them all out, in order to keep themselves from getting involved in their cult to false gods. Since they didn't do it the right way they soon were worshiping the local deities. A pattern was established: desobedience, false god worship, the punishment (they being delivered to plunderers), repentment and deliverance from their enemies by the means of a leader raised by God. Samson, Othniel and a number of others were raised to get the Israelites out of the mess they got themslelves in. The book of Judges ends with the sentence: "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes". We all know about the importance of Law and Order, and that's what was lacking in Israel those days. Today Israel is again dealing with the "locals", but - although God has not changed - people have, and we are all witnessing a XXI century version of the book of Judges. One could say that God seems to be quiet in His corner, but it's pretty obvious that He is the one in command of what goes on in the Middle East. And the United States of America is his instrument, including the present administration. I see no absurd in George Walker Bush's beliefe that he is a "Judge" raised by God. He is a man that doesn't cheat on his wife, doesn't indulge in silly habits and is on Israel's side. Peace and happiness for every man. Ion Muniz
