In the novel "The great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick Carraway, the storyteller and pawn in a game (minor charakter), himself tells the storie of Jay Gatsby and his great love Daisy after ending of the first world war, in the time of the lost reality in the USA. For Gatsby, who arose from poor circumstances and who got ahead to the highest social levels of the paradoxical and frivolous society of New York within few years after the war, his excessiv life in luxury - as a dream about the new open boundaries for all men - becomes its own illusion of the "lost society" at the end.

His parties which exceed every social event are self-explanatory.His property and the background of the man "Gatsby" persist closed and cryptically to an outsider.

But Jay has to chose that way, if he want to see his great love Daisy again who is meanwhile married with Tom Buchanan and has a child with this man. Daisy is dazzled of Gatsbys brightness which he doesn't just emit by his parties. The crackling and emotional situation of the acts and events contributes its component. Jay Gatsby hopes inwardly that his former great love come to a real end now, as Daisy parts from Tom and marries him, Jay.

Actually Jay and Daisy get closer again, outwardly. Inwardly the cleft gets nearly even bigger then ever between the former poor man and the always rich woman and daughter of a well-of, conservative home. The closer the lovers get, the more they push each other away. Daisy denies the decision to divorce from her violent husbend who influences her by indicating Gatsbys dubiously affairs. Aligned to a possible divorce a scandal which is morally not acceptable becomes a insuperable barrier. The barriers which seem to dissapear outwardly in that time are stucked like a stigma in the peoples minds more then ever. The outward, feigned, new openness and tolerance becomes an inward, overtrumping intolerance which have its source at the now denied social standards and anticipations.

As Daisy causes an lethal accident with Gatsbys car, in which her husbands concubine, Myrtle Wilson, dies, dark shadows of foreboding appear in Jays mind. George Wilson, Mytles defrauded and lovesick husband swears by revenge for his loved wifes death. Searching the pretended murderer Tom Buchanan sends George to his rival Jay Gatsby, owner of the car. All amount to fatal ending. Gatsby is litteraly executed by George. Afterwards Wilson as well shoots himself to evade the punishment and to be with his loved wife.

To understand the action nowadays you have to concern the background of that short period. The shock of the twenties caved in a whole generation all over the world. The role models changed, habits weren't found anymore, moral and humanity would stay behind and needed to, in a new, old world without any futur to those who can't keep up. Then falshood became truth and truth became falshood. A world made of glamour and illusion altering the american dream into a comedy in which at once all seems possible but nothing is really reachable, because of boundaries which can't be seen and don't want to be seen. Especially such an introverted and sensitive person like Jay, who oscillate between a dreaming romantic and a neurotics obsessed by megalomania but even more lonely and isolated, can glance at a new, different world for a very short time.

The nearly schizophrenic manner to think by one way and to act by another is reflected by the actors scenes in every character. Greed for values, emotions and moral and their exploition become a balancing act between poor and rich, between up and down, between to be and not to be and between life and death. At that dangerous balancing act Jay Gatsby falls far and deep, into a hole without any ground, without ending, as well as the society does, too.
