There he finds the remains of a devastated Jewish community. Many of its members have been killed or maimed; the survivors are traumatized and broken. The markets are deserted, and the synagogues that have not been destroyed have been looted and are empty of worshippers. All lies in ruins in a bleak, post-Holocaust world.
