Sand Captains
(Jorge Amado)
'Sand Captains' is a novel about a group of abandoned and forgotten minors that terrorize Salvador. The only that maintain a relation with them are the city father, Padre José Pedro, and a local healer. Pedro Bala, the lider, with long blonde hairs and a scar on his face, is a kind of a father to the other childs, even being as young as the others, and then he discovers to be the son of an union lider killed durong a strike; Volta Seca, Lampião's protegè, hates the authoritys e wishes to become a hitman; Professor, who read and draw wildly, has a very peculiar talent; Gato, with is on-going touch, ends up conquering the heart of a hore, Dalva; Sem-Pernas, the lump kid tha acts as a spy by pretending to be a motherless child (and, in one of the houses he visits, is wellcomed, but, without knowing how, ends up fooling the family); João Grande, the 'good neger', as Pedro Bala says, the second in the line of command; Querido-de-Deus, a 'capoeira' sportsman qich is only a friend of the gang; and Pirulito, wich has a huge religious belief. The strong point of the first part can be divided in two: when the kids get involved with a circus that came in town and reveal all their childness; and when the goosepops attacks the city and even takes away one's life, even with Padre José Pedro helping out and getting his neck risked for it. The second part, a girl becomes the first 'Sand Captain', e even though all the boys try to rape her at the beginning, she becomes everybodys's mother and sister. Homossexuality is a common pratice among the group, even though Pedro Bala tries to stop it at a given time, and all of them use to 'score some chicks' in the beach. But Professor and Pedro Bala both fall in love for Dora, while she falls for Pedro Bala. When they are captured (because in few time she begins stealing like the other boys), they are severelly punished. Once escaped, they love eachother for the first time on teh beach and she dies, pointing the begin of the end of the group. The last part will show us the tumble of the group. 'Sand Captains' are heroic Robin Hood's of modern times who steal from the rich to give to them (the poor). Communism is shown as something good, and Padre José Pedro has doubts concerning the official Church position regarding the matter. Broadly, the social concerns fill the script, but the kid's existencial problems makes them corajeous and unique characters, brave 'Sand Captains' in Salvador.
