Heart Of Darkness
(Joseph Conrad)

Publicidade
In this legendary novel by Joseph Conrad, the main character heads into the "heart of darkness", or the deep center of Africa. Trying to reach a man who works for their company, Kurtz, the narrator goes on a series of disturbing adventures, deeper and deeper into the Congo. Known as a relatively psychological novel, in which the characters begin to disintegrate as people under the alienation of the civilized world, the novel calls into question the concept of civility at all. An experience the author describes as "the horror, the horror" the reader leaves with a feeling of dread involving both the removed and white-washed cilvilized world, and also the terror and horror of the deep psyche. Many people believe this novel travels further and further into the depths of the mind, not just deep into the congo. The movie Apocalypse Now is a great filmiac version of the novel, though it takes place in Vietnam instead of Africa. But take note of the heads on posts outside Kurtz's hideout, as this is seen in the novel as well. The interesting uses of black and white to represent dark and light, evil and good, and the unknown and unknown is very describtive, and we learn that everything is never what it seems. In the end the narrator returns to Europe a very changed man, with his world and his mind never to return to normal. Which, the reader is left to ponder, may not necessarily be a bad thing.
